A Periodontology is a special discipline of Dentistry that examines the supporting structures of teeth and the conditions affecting them. During practices students primarily focus on scaling and polishing, as the removal of dental calculus is an essential part of the periodontal treatment. Students also have the opportunity to observe surgical periodontal procedures performed by professors.
The Department takes part in graduate and postgraduate education too. Third year students prepare for complex practices of fourth year with „Periodontology propedeutics” subject in which they have phantom and clinical practices. Periodontology is part of the curriculum of fourth and fifth year Dentistry students. Lecturers and tutors of the Department also participate in the education of other dental topics, e.g. Odontology, Oral Biology, Dental Radiology and Preventive Dentistry.
According to complex therapeutic rules, besides conservative therapy it is possible to perform surgical therapy as well. Possible general diseases can be detected in the background with laboratory diagnostics in the case of patients’ severe periodontal disorders. The lecturers and tutors of the Department are also involved in significant scientific research and cooperate with many other departments of the University of Debrecen, such as the Institute of Medical Microbiology. The main scientific topics are the ”Investigation of the occlusion of teeth and temporomandibular disorders”, „Investigations of dental and periodontal aspects of CBCT”, ”Detection of human herpesviruses in periodontal inflammations and association with clinical symptoms” and ”Examination of anaerob bacterial flora of periodontitis and association with the periodontal status of the patient”.
